アブドゥルラザク・グルナ

アブドゥルラザク・グルナ（英語: Abdulrazak Gurnah、1948年12月20日 - ）は、ザンジバル（1964年以降タンザニアに合併）生まれのイギリスの小説家・評論家・文学研究者。長くケント大学でアフリカ・カリブ文学やポストコロニアル理論を講じた。主要な作品は英語で発表されている。2021年ノーベル文学賞受賞。

来歴

現在はタンザニアのザンジバルに生まれ、1968年にザンジバル革命の混乱を逃れてイギリスへ渡った。カンタベリー・クライストチャーチ大学で学んだあと、1982年にケント大学で文学の博士号を取得した。

グルナは1970年代後半にナイジェリアの雑誌へ短篇小説をいくつか寄稿していたが、長編第1作は1987年の『別離の記憶』(Memory of Departure) である。

この作品は1960年代後半のザンジバルが舞台で、政治腐敗と暴力が横行する港町に生まれた主人公の青年ハッサン・オマルが、ケニアで暮らす富裕な親族のもとへ身を寄せてようやく生活を安定させるが、しだいにナイロビの物質主義にも失望してゆく姿を描いている。

オマルは美しい女性サルマと出会って狂った世界を生きのびる道を模索するようになるが、伝統文化と物質主義が衝突する世界にくるしむ登場人物が安住の地をもとめるという構図は、以後のグルナの作品にも繰り返し描かれている。

グルナの長編第2作『巡礼の路』(Pilgrims Way)、さらに第3作『ドッティ』 (Dottie: A Narrative of (Un)Belonging) は、ともに東アフリカからイギリスを訪れた青年や女性たちが、貧困とイギリス社会の過酷な人種差別に直面してゆく姿を描く。1994年に発表された Paradise では再び東アフリカを舞台とし、コンラッド『闇の奥』の物語世界を換骨奪胎しながらアフリカの貧困、伝統文化と近代文明の相剋という主題を扱って高く評価され、同年のブッカー賞候補となった。

以後グルナは英語圏の代表的作家の1人と目されるようになるが、とくに2001年の『海辺で』(By the Sea) が大きな注目を集めた。この作品以後、自文化と母語から切り離されて生きる人々というグルナの物語は移民・難民の急増という現代的主題に焦点を当てているとみなされて、とりわけポストコロニアル文学の文脈で高く評価されるようになり、多くの研究が現れた。

文学研究者としては、ケンブリッジ大学から刊行されたサルマン・ラシュディ研究論集の編纂や、ウォーレ・ショインカをはじめとする旧植民地の文学研究などを行っている。2016年にはブッカー賞選考委員を務めた。
